Role of the FAO
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is an agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries and countries in transition modernise and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all.
Importance to the Egg Industry
The IEC and FAO work together on the common issues of poultry egg production, poultry health and animal welfare, development and promotion of appropriate codes and best practices for responsible poultry production. They work to support less developed countries and countries with emerging economies in improving and expanding egg production to feed a constantly growing population. The IEC also supports policy development at FAO in areas that impact the international egg industry. IEC looks to support FAO technical activities to ensure the safety of egg and egg products
There is a formally recognised partnership between the FAO and IEC, with IEC working together with FAO on the following specific initiatives:
- Member of UN FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance partnership.
- Member of FAO’s multi-stakeholder initiative named “Global agenda of action in support of sustainable livestock sector development”.
- Joint FAO-IEC editing of a book reviewing the role and impact of eggs in society (nutrition, poverty alleviation, cultural and societal aspects).
