IEC encouraged the industry to use #WorldEggDay in their communications for World Egg Day. The result was overwhelming - with the hashtag trending globally throughout the day. This snowball effect demonstrates the power of social media and IEC members’ instrumental role in instigating effective consumer outreach, and getting the world talking about eggs. This year our message was loud and clear – ‘eggs are a source of high quality protein’. It’s a mantra that we must all continue to shout from the rooftops as we continue to engage with a huge global audience.

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to spread the good word, through a variety of innovative activities. It is important to remember that there is a serious motive that drives World Egg Day. This special calendar date provides an invaluable opportunity to connect with consumers. Through dedicated programmes of ongoing education and engagement, we can help to grow our respective markets – increasing egg consumption to the benefit of our industry and all its members.

However, as soon as one date passes, another is set, and now we must all gear ourselves towards World Egg Day 2017 which will take place on Friday 13th October. Having a coordinated marketing strategy in place for next year, will help to maximise the effectiveness of your campaign - so start planning now.

Regional Spotlight - Banging the drum in Bangladesh

Perhaps one of the most encouraging signs to emerge during 2016 has been the industry bodies that have embraced the spirit of World Egg Day and implemented a programme that further promotes our core messages.

This year Bangladesh Animal Agriculture Society (BAAS) were supported by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), to help with their World Egg Day celebrations. The power of the egg was communicated amongst consumers and BAAS has planned events in phases throughout 2016-2017.

On Friday 14th October 2016 a rally was held on Manik Mia Avenue, the widest road in Dhaka, located in front of National Parliament House of Bangladesh. Participants included industry employees, educationists, nutritionists, physicians, researchers, veterinarians and animal scientists; who congregated together wearing branded t-shirts and caps. Festoons and banners displayed during the rally focussed consumers’ attention to the nutritional benefits of eggs. During the rally 5,000 boiled eggs in individual boxes were distributed to passers-by. The momentum generated by the rally will be continued with the following activities:

  • Egg Fest – mid-January 2017 For the first time in Bangladesh, fifty leading food companies, hotels and restaurants will showcase and sell their egg specialities.
  • Egg Recipe Competition – mid-March 2017 Renowned TV personality, Nahid Osman, will encourage the public to submit their family favourites. The winning recipe will be announced at the KIB Conference Centre.
  • Drawing Competition – mid-March 2017 Children throughout Bangladesh are being invited to submit their creative illustrations depicting what the egg means to them.
  • BAAS Egg Award 2016 – mid-March 2017 As part of its ongoing commitment to the egg industry in Bangladesh, BAAS will be celebrating those businesses that have made the most significant contribution this year.

Message from Md. Morshed Alam, President, BAAS “We are promoting egg to the consumers as good food and encouraging the producers to produce quality eggs at affordable retail price for their sustainability. In coming days more innovative events of Bangladesh Animal Agriculture Society (BAAS) will attract both the consumers and producers to egg.”

Don’t forget make a date with an egg - Friday 13th October 2017, let’s all capitalise on this year’s achievements.
